The 20 Jahre Golf GTi 1996-1997

The birth of a legend.

In 1976 a group of engineers from the Volkswagen Research and Development Center had a visionary concept. A car that, whilst understated  on the outside, delivered outstanding performance and a exhilarating drive. The project was classified “Sport-Golf”.

Within a short space of time, the Golf GTi was born a new breed of  car established. After two decades the Golf Gti still remains one of the most desirable cars in its class. Many have attempted to match the GTi´s performance but few have captured the aura that sets the Golf GTi apart from the competition.  To commemorate this milestone, Volkswagen launched a limited Golf GTi that encompasses 21 years of engineering excellence. This special edition included subtle touches to remind you of it´s place in automotive history. Take for example the checked seat coverings, the red striped bumpers, the eye catching GTi branding  a classic golf-ball gear lever now crafted from aluminium, and the gaiter had red stitching. Black floor mats with red edging, the handbrake lever had a red grip and the instrument had silver faces. 16in BBS wheels, red enamelled callipers,  red seat belts, leather wheel rim with red stitching, and a special exhaust system. The car had also an “Gamma” radio with Subwoofer and CD-changer installed in the trunk. Electric mirrors, electric windows and electric sunroof. And for the extra safety, Airbags was installed both at drivers and passengers sites.

Performance was a key element in the excitement of this GTi, but not as the expense of fuel efficiency and environmental awareness. You could choose either the 8 valve 115Bhp, the 16 valve 150Bhp engine or the 110Bhp Tdi engine for the 21st anniversary GTi.
