VW Twin Scirocco 360/4 (Project car) 1982

VW Motorsport decided to follow their twin-engined Jetta with a highly potent Scirocco coupe with power from eight cylinders: four in their legal place under the front bonnet and another four  under the rear hatch. Each engine had it´s own close-ratio five speed gearbox, servo assisted and hydralically operated clutch and self-locking differential.

Allthough the power units look quite normal from the outside their internals was far from production specifiaction. With a bore of 81,25 and a stroke of 86,40mm, capacity had been increased to 1791cc. Thus the volume where the power is generated adds up to 3582cc. A compressionratio of 10.9 to 1 and sophisticated fuel-injection and ignition systems helped to extract 180Bhp at 7200Rpm´s from each engine. Thus a combined output of 360 Bhp is available and an imposing maximum torque of 296lb ft. (2x148lb ft.) comes in at 5800Rpm. Therefore this car was named 360/4 (360Bhp 4wd).

The throttles of both engines was electronically synchronized and the driver is able to vary the ratio of power delivery at front and rear..

To cope with the increased power , the breaking system had to be redesigned. There was 10inch vetillatated disc brakes at all four wheels with two pairs of pistons in light alloy calipers, servo operated.

The bodyshell modifications were different from those of the twin-motor Jetta. A suitable hole was cut in the shell to accept the rear drivetrain which had to be angled forward from the rear axle line.

Suspension was independent at both ends by spring struts and gas dampers. The lower wishbones for the front wheels follow production style fabricated arms: at rear inverted tubular wishbones and short tension stayas was used.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 315Bhp per ton, an exciting performance could be expected. The Twin-Scirocco accelrete in 4,6sec from 0-100Km/h and nedded no more than 14,1sec to reach 200Km/h.

The engine modifiactions were carried out by Eckart Berg, and in the construction of the car the well-knowned racing car constructor Kurt Bergmann from Austria played a leading part.
